Editorial October 2024

Let me start with the TCM’s article – as like all of us, TCM looks back at the TBC 2024:

“Like every other NonStop vendor we know, there is an air of expectation in the lead up to each year’s NonStop TBC Conference.” And then: “The NonStop TBC 2024 Conference lived up to all of those expectations and more. From the very first session to the closing morning, there was something on offer for all who participated. TCM has a tradition of supporting the major events at as high a level as offered and this year, TCM enjoyed participating as a Platinum Sponsor and the company took full advantage of all the benefits such a high profile afforded us.”

TANDsoft as well was quite pleased with the results of the TBC: “This event was a truly enjoyable and highly productive one for TANDsoft. We were able to have a lot of great conversations with our customers, partners, and HPE representatives, and had the opportunity to introduce our solutions to many attendees.”

NTI talks about the conference as well: “As we look back at our collective stock of NonStop and the former Tandem Computers and at the many celebratory tee-shirts and coffee mugs, perhaps the coolest moment of all was the presence and distribution of two handled mugs and tee-shirts embossed with messages like, “celebrating 50 years of innovation,” as well as “50 years of NonStop: TBC by the Sea.” And did you manage to secure for yourself our drink coasters celebrating 50 years while introducing our theme for 2025 first introduced at NonStop TBC 24, “Save time, save money, save NonStop!”

In the Pyalla Technologies article, Real Time View, Richard Buckle talks about the 15th anniversary of the Pyalla Technologies (has it been that long?) and summarizes our impressions at the TBC 2024: “Coming back from NonStop TBC 2024, driving as we typically prefer to do, gave Margo and me plenty of opportunity to reflect on what took place in Monterey. As had been the case for many years, the event opens with a number of keynotes coming from executives as they were updating the NonStop community on many of the positive aspects of recent NonStop activities. The standout observation continued to be about the pressing need to add new solutions vendors and to address new market verticals.”

CSP, a Platinum sponsor of the TBC 2024 wrote: “We recognize that NonStop users require a non-disruptive solution that is simple to use and provides comprehensive reports to detect abnormalities in their NonStop System. Consider CSP Vulnerability Scanner, our response to those requests, and it was featured in our presentation at this year’s NonStop TBC 2024, along with CSP Authenticator +.”

ETI says: “What take-aways did we leave with following NonStop TBC 2024?  The commitment made by HPE executives to the success of NonStop, ongoing processing architecture resiliency advancements shown by HPE Spaceborne computers, and continuous alignment with the enhanced NIST 2.0 Cybersecurity Framework were key takeaways. Listening to Casey Taylor VP & GM, HPE NonStop, Compute, High Performance Computing & Artificial Intelligence has proved hard to ignore. Her demonstration of improved business performance is going a long way to convince IT executives of the longer-term viability of NonStop.”

comforte’s Thomas Gloerfeld writes: “First off, a Big Thank you to the CONNECT team – Kelly, Kristi and Stacie – for organizing this year’s NonStop TBC in Monterey. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Tandem/NonStop. Quite an achievement!” Thomas then wrote that, “When I started my career in the NonStop business some 30 years ago, there were predictions that the Tandem platform would cease to exist! While some users did indeed go off the platform (a painful process!) or tried to, others remained on NonStop. It is these users who formed a strong NonStop user community, and it’s still going strong to this day. The NonStop TBC in Monterey was a testament to that!”

What you will also come across is a number of opinion columns and commentaries from some NonStop TBC 2024 Conference participants:

Frans Jongma’s commentary talks about many topics, particularly enhancements you will find in NonStop SQL/MX 3.9, and he points out that TBC 2024 was quite special: “While everyone came to celebrate 50 years of NonStop computing, I realized that I started my career in IT the same year (1976) as Tandem Computers shipped the first systems. I also celebrated my 35th NonStop anniversary this September. Before joining Tandem, I worked with several operating systems: DEC System 10, Honeywell Bull OS/2000 and GCOS 6, Harris Vulcan/VOS, Harris CX/UX and Guardian/NonStop OS.

The only one left from the list is NonStop OS and for a good reason.” To find out what Frans considers a key to NonStop survival you just need to read his article!

Keith Moore’s commentary emphasizes: “Away from the fun, the business at hand was to learn, teach, and engage the NonStop user community at individual levels for as many as I could. I had concerns going in that there might be a retreat from the usual customer participation, but in the end, there were supporting customer users and great content and support from all of the HPE partners.” Furthermore, wrote Keith, “After all of these years, it is amazing that the community is still fresh with enthusiasm each year. Beyond this, I was even more encouraged to see year over year, continuing shift toward new users. It’s not just the younger ages, but more importantly the larger number of users that are newer to the NonStop as a technology.”

In Richard Buckle’s opinion article Richard concludes: “The signs are there that HPE believes in NonStop. Management is executing to plans that include adding new logos. But to make it all happen and to be visible to the global community it will take effort from all of us and in the quiet of the evening, over small talk and chit-chat, the next market vertical to bloom under NonStop might just very well surface.”

Gravic wrote 2 articles – the first one described its participation in TBC 2024 in a day-by-day format  – article concludes with: “TBC was a major success, with a lot of positive energy and momentum. We greatly enjoyed meeting with you all and left the event with valuable key takeaways and new connections. We hope to see you next year at TBC25 in Houston or another one of the regional events held throughout the year.”

The second submission is giving a credit to recipients of  “the 2024 HPE Shadowbase Hall of Fame Awards to Amy Sochipun Vajropala (DataOne Asia CEO) and Darshan Mandrekar (HPE Mission Critical Solutions Sales) and Peter Ow (HPE Solution Architect) for Outstanding Sales Growth – Thailand.”

From Lusis comes an article telling us more about company spirit as it celebrates its 25th anniversary: “Celebrating 25 years of success means recognizing the value of our partnerships and acknowledging the talented individuals who have brought us here. Our collaboration with HPE is central to our journey, enabling us to continuously evolve and lead the way in the payments industry. As we celebrate this important milestone, we raise a glass not just to what we’ve accomplished but to what lies ahead—continuing to innovate, adapt, and shape the future of mission-critical payment systems.”

NuWave article written by a software engineer working for the company – read it, it gives you an explanation of what is NuWave!

OmniPayments must have enjoyed the TBC 2024, considering their closing of this article with: “As we look forward to further regional events as we come to the end of 2024 and begin the process of further aligning our messaging with that of NonStop, we can only add that, like everyone who attended NonStop TBC 2024 this year in Monterey, California, we will be making plans to be a presence at the planned NonStop TBC 2025 in HPE’s backyard, Houston Texas.” Do read the article, it contains interesting topics and observations.
