Yes, the year 2020 represents the beginning of the third decade of the 21st century. Unbelievable! And with the start of every New Year, the universal tendency is to reflect on the past while looking towards the future.

Tandem Computers was founded in 1974, and shipped its first T/16 system to Citibank in May of 1976. The T/16 was later re-branded to NonStop I, which was replaced by NonStop II in 1981. From there through the VLX, CLX, Cyclones, Himalaya K- and S-Series, and Integrity Systems, plus two acquisitions, NonStop remained true to its goal of creating the most fault tolerant machines possible for the most critical business applications existent.

Looking forward, it’s fair to say that NonStop X will continue to find excellent acceptance among customers who demand a true “NonStop” solution. In addition, Virtual NonStop is expected to go into production environments in 2020; this is truly an historic milestone in the 46 year history of the NonStop platform.

How about Tributary Systems?

Founded in 1990, Tributary Systems, or TSI, was involved in the refurbishment and sale of Tandem hardware, while concurrently manufacturing the first “Tandem compatible” tape storage devices available directly to NonStop customers.

In 1996, TSI became an OEM supplier of tape devices to Tandem, a relationship that continued with NonStop. In addition to tape drives, TSI has developed, supplied, and supported all NonStop library management software, and actual tape libraries, from small cartridge loaders to silos big enough to physically walk into.

Some of the tape drive families TSI has provided include Marathon, 9840, DLT (Digital Linear Tape), SDLT (Super Digital Linear Tape), DAT (Digital Audio Tape) and most recently LTO (Linear Tape Open).

Importantly, Tributary Systems is still able to support legacy tape drives. Customers that have large catalogs of older media types may find it inconvenient if not nearly impossible to move archived data to the newer LTO cartridge types. Retention of functional legacy tape drives becomes very important, and a huge cost savings over the procurement of new tape media, drives, and the time and effort involved in actually transferring the data. Customers dealing with this issue should always contact Tributary first, more often than not TSI is able to repair or find replacements for all legacy NonStop tape drives.

Tributary Systems’ future is as exciting as NonStop’s! With our Storage Director software defined, policy-based and tiered enterprise backup virtualization solution that enables data from any host, OS or backup application, to be backed up to any storage device, medium or technology, TSI is leading the industry. For Cloud-based backup, Storage Director interfaces with IBM’s Cloud Object Storage, Hitachi’s HCP, or any S3 compatible cloud.

Being a fully virtualized target for any backup application, such as Spectrum Protect, NetBackup, Commvault, Veeam, etc., Storage Director enables policy-based data pools to be created and backed up to multiple targets and replicated for remote storage and DR. Concurrent with HPE NonStop backups, Storage Director is able to present a single backup target or solution for backing up all open environments, such as Linux, Windows, VMWare, UNIX, etc. as well as other proprietary host platforms, such as IBM Mainframe (z/OS), iSeries, HP Open VMS etc. on a single node

Simply put, Storage Director is the most straightforward and best way to connect any NonStop server to any storage device or the Cloud (Public or Private). Storage Director provides for secure and high-performance Backup/ Restore operations at the lowest cost. Why continue with “silo” thinking for backup infrastructure, while HPE NonStop is moving forward with hardware agnostic processors?

So as we embark together on our journey through the third decade of the 21st century, we here at TSI are looking forward to perhaps the most successful and innovative era in the NonStop community’s long history. Time will tell…….
