2021. What an interesting year. With the world turned upside down by a pandemic that seemingly had its sights set on...
HPE RUGs – All we need to know for 2020
NonStop Insider
DanWhile preparing to write a RUG update I came across the picture of two of the best known individuals in the world – Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. Currently ranked first and third in the richest man in the world stakes, they have been friends for a long time now with both reputed to have taken to eating ice creams at a local Omaha Dairy Queen. At any serious event where these two are participating it is hard to imagine any event’s attendee not knowing who they are and yet, there they are, the ubiquitous name tag pinned to each of their shirts. Nothing glamorous, mind you, just their name in fairly ordinary type.
Makes you wonder though just how humble both of these industry giants have become. Both have vowed to give away most of their fortunes – both hovering around the $100 billion mark – and yet, they are happy to walk the pathways of the venue without a huge entourage or being surrounded by a wall of security guards. Back in the 1990s I was at a Gartner IT Symposium where Bill spoke and as he strode to the podium, nicely dressed in in a suit and tie, it occurred to me right then and there that Microsoft had become the establishment whereas vendors like IBM were struggling to find a relevant identity as the 21st century loomed. As for Warren well, he still has the GEICO stock he first acquired in 1951 so “buying then holding” certainly cannot be argued against. Interesting enough, after a short period of dabbling in IBM stock, he recently sold it all off as it was failing his most important litmus test of all – Warren has to like the management and the decisions they make. Enough said!
For the NonStop community 2020 will be once again providing a full calendar of events that span the globe. AsiaPac will kick off the year with a series of events in February, 2020. Closer to home we will have the annual SunTUG event taking place in sunny Tampa – always a welcome break from winters snow for all those who live in the northern states of America. For now though, it’s as if in January the NonStop community takes the time to pause, take a deep breath and even, on occasion, cross their collective fingers. What will drive the agenda for 2020 and what will be recalled later in the year as the game-changing highlights. Whatever happens we will hear it first at a national or regional event and along the way, there is bound to be plenty of newsworthy story lines developing.
None of us will be as well recognized as either Bill or Warren even if all of us will be wearing name tags on more than one occasion. On the other hand, I have to believe we will be left with as big as smiles as are evident on their faces at the time this photo was taken! If I were to speculate then in my opinion, look to bigger things being said about the ease of development (of new) applications on NonStop. For as long as I can remember, the talk was all about ease of migration but after what was presented at user events last year I am wondering whether the needle has moved once again favoring the ease with which new applications can be deployed on NonStop. In the meantime (and we have a lot of time to discuss, of course), I am looking forward to 2020 and the dates that have already been circled in the calendar so yes, all of us here at NonStop Insider look forward to seeing you as we all begin to make plans:
