The conference may have been in Monterey but that didn’t deter
some folks from taking a short drive to Carmel by the Sea.
With the arrival of October, Pyalla Technologies, LLC celebrates the start of its sixteenth year in business. With fifteen years of operation now in the books, while this isn’t an overwhelming number given how NonStop just celebrated fifty years and numerous NonStop vendors have gone well past forty years, nevertheless when you look at the statistics of company startups, this is still a very good result.
Now that we have wrapped up giving ourselves a pat on the back, the work continues. And its primary focus in these times is the support we provide user gatherings worldwide. Would you be surprised to read that the very first invoice that was raised by Pyalla Technologies, LLC, back in October 2009, was for expenses incurred in support of a vendor at the 2009 CTUG event in Toronto. As for the third invoice, it was for participation in GTUG held in Darmstadt. The second invoice, you may wonder? Well, it was a white paper on the future of SOA.
Attending NonStop community events, writing white papers and following up, as I did back then, with presentations to the NonStop community, has become the hallmark of Pyalla. Gradually morphing into a storyteller with a presence on social media along with other digital media channels such as this one, NonStop Insider, as well as The Connection and Connect Converge, have given the company the opportunity to cover a variety of topics and to address an ever-changing landscape for NonStop. Who would have guessed that in fifteen years, NonStop would have morphed the way it has right alongside Pyalla?
Coming back from NonStop TBC 2024, driving as we typically prefer to do, gave Margo and me plenty of opportunity to reflect on what took place in Monterey. As had been the case for many years, the event opens with a number of keynotes coming from executives as they were updating the NonStop community on many of the positive aspects of recent NonStop activities. The standout observation continued to be about the pressing need to add new solutions vendors and to address new market verticals.
Nothing new about these observations as they have been made many times in the previous years. But this past week, there was a sense of urgency permeating almost every conversation that took place between community members and the NonStop team. Failing a lack of direct injection of funds, this continue to be a tough hill to climb and yet, are there early signs that this might be corrected in the near term? For instance, we now clearly have a manufacturing solution on par with the best solutions available to financial institutions. But can we add one or two more in 2024 – 2025?
There were a couple of tempting ideas floated across the community. When you think of data, created on NonStop (according to Jeff Kyle as stated two years ago) and that data on NonStop is the freshest on NonStop (according to Krik Bresniker as stated last year), what we are witnessing is that when it comes to data, there is a “supply chain” that originates on NonStop. A sequence that is super critical to business and where disruptions carry over to the real world with devasting effect. However, this is already recognized by many within the NonStop community and isn’t an entirely new idea. What might be new is to see emphasis on this “feature” carry over into marketing campaigns by several NonStop vendors.
What may be more interesting still is the real world of supply chain management. Our world runs on supply chains and disruption to a major supply chain in the real world not only has devastating impact on industries up and down the chain, but causes havoc among consumers. Building projects can be delayed; deliveries of new cars suspended; critical foods left to rot; millions of workers left idle. There is nothing good ever coming out of a broken supply chain and yes, they run today 24 x 7. So, who are the big players in this market? What technologists lead the way? Where do the solutions come from? Perhaps leaving NonStop TBC 2024, we will look for answers and begin to make progress in this area.
This dovetails into what I view as perhaps the easiest new market to enter; transportation and distribution. With solutions for Container Ports, a presence in Rail transportation as I understand it and yes, much of what makes transportation and distribution work that is a parallel to what is supported today by NonStop across financial institutions – yes, when it comes to consumers, nothing would move if it wasn’t ordered and paid for – but again, an investment is made. Perhaps this is simply coming to understand what we already have in place and then revisiting how it is packaged and marketed by the NonStop team.
One last item and I have to admit, it is an item that is truly in its infancy. IBM Mainframe migrations. As the NonStop executives provide regional sales updates, reference to a mainframe migration to NonStop was briefly referenced as having been successfully completed in Japan, as I recall. Having straddled the worlds of NonStop and Mainframes for fifty plus years, excuse me if I come across with a little more excitement than normal. This is home turf for Pyalla.
Think SNAX/CDF; NonStop NET/MASTER; ICE and uLinga and even MQSeries. Some projects worked well while some floundered. However, the opportunities that arose from successfully deploying NonStop alongside of Mainframes beckons the next step, complete migration. NonStop is the very essence of a modern platform while the Mainframe has struggled to convince communities of a likewise presence. While answers are still embryonic, there are some pretty smart folks now mulling this opportunity and it was one where my clients working together, may have an opportunity to turn this into reality.
As I look back at the fifteen years, it is fitting then that Pyalla started with a visit to a RUG event as now, the company looks back at events just completed with a tad of nostalgia. Expectations are that we will be present at even more events to come, of course. Will we see you at the next event? Will there be more to talk about NonStop and the user community and a growing presence of NonStop in new and thriving market verticals? And, most important of all, will we all be looking at how well we are laying tracks for the next fifty years of NonStop!
