Editorial June 2024
In the June 2024 edition of the NonStop Insider you will find a lot of excitement related to the Tandem’s (now HPE NonStop)’s 50th anniversary.
Let me start with the nostalgia of the now retired “Tandemites” – many of whom lived through Compaq’s acquisition of Tandem and then HP acquisition of Compaq and who in their hearts still have a Tandem despite the name change of the brand Tandem to NonStop and company now being a NonStop organization within HPE.
Starting with the article by Steve Saltwick that begins with: “Tandem Computers was the best company I ever worked for – BAR NONE.” And then Steve says “So; I want to CELEBRATE Tandem at the 50-year mark.”
Steve is referring to the celebration that will be held in Texas described in Diane Funkhouser’s article which begins with: “To honor the 50-year legacy of Tandem Computers, Jimmy Treybig has been involved in planning a Texas-sized Reunion Celebration at the Dallas/Plano Marriott Legacy Town Center. Anyone with a history working with or for Tandem is invited to attend. The event kicks-off on Friday, September 6th at 4PM with a traditional Beer Bust, augmented by nachos, churros and margaritas. .” Article contains a promotion: “Pssst: Here is a special for the NonStop Insider readers: A Promo Code, valid until the end of June. The code provides a free drink ticket with the purchase of a General Admission Dinner + 1, 2 or 3 Drink Tickets. The code is: InsideScoop”
The article dedicated to the N2TUG meeting also refers to Diane’s article and starts with: “We couldn’t ignore the fact that NonStop is celebrating 50 years this year, so we took the opportunity to celebrate with our theme of ‘Golden: 50 Years of NonStop.’”
The article thanks sponsors, presenter and HPE team for their support for regional meetings, N2TUG in particular this time and it was great to see the organizers – look for the picture in the article that has a byline “XID’s Bill Honaker taking notes as HPE’s Justin Simonds provides update on NonStop Roadmap.” This article ends with “Hopefully, you’ll be able to attend the 50th anniversary celebration as well as the Technical Boot Camp in Monterey this September. Enjoy the photos provided here and hopefully it’ll help you decide to and make plans to join us!”
Comforte’s article explores the topic of AI and concludes: “With everyone in the organisation pulling in the same direction, it becomes much easier to optimize the use of emerging technologies like AI. Organisations that get this right will find themselves in the driving seat for sustainable growth.”
ETI-NET’s article emphasizes importance of the gatherings of folks involved with many operational aspects of the NonStop, Mike Mitsch, ETI-NET Director, Business Development writes: “With a growing emphasis on regional gatherings among NonStop customers there really isn’t a better forum for ensuring active interchanges between NonStop customers, vendors, system integrators and value-added resellers. Nowhere else can you count on being able to converse directly with those responsible for operational aspects of NonStop systems applications and middleware. It is at these gatherings that a circumstance where two-way exchanges flourish and, as is often the case, a more complete appreciation of a NonStop customers’ operational requirements is gained.”
NTI also talks of increased popularity of the regional events, which NTI supports at the highest level. NTI, just as many others speaks of its successes: “Success is not always easy to bottle. For some, it might be argued that it can be measured on this or that basis. However, what the elevated presence and sponsorship of NTI is hard to ignore or even debate is that many more NonStop community members have become better educated on the benefits the company’s DRNet® product portfolio can provide. Successful events wouldn’t be as meaningful to the NonStop community if they didn’t also include references to successful product deliveries. Wining new customers is always the litmus test for success and in 2023, new logos were added to the NTI customer profile just as the opportunity pipeline deepened.”
Gravic’s article starts with: “Gravic published an article, Gravic, Inc. Celebrates its 45th Anniversary – Then vs. Now, in the May/June issue of The Connection. It shares stories from our origins and history, while expressing our gratitude for everyone who worked with Gravic over the past 45 years. You do not want to miss the throwback picture of the Holenstein brothers!” Read Gravic’s article in NonStop Insider as in addition to other topics includes information on Gravic’s success and participation in many regional events – take a look, it contains a lot of pictures!
Lusis Payments article talks about its ATM Software is very informative and it concludes with: “Lusis Payments ATM Software, powered by TANGO, is not just a solution—it’s a catalyst for transformation in ATM management. With TANGO as the backbone, coupled with our commitment to innovation, adaptability, and customer-centric design, we empower financial institutions to navigate the evolving digital landscape with confidence.”
Pyalla Opinion article discusses a lot of aspects of the future of NonStop – after all it is a Gold 50th Anniversary. Read the article – it final paragraph says: “So; let’s keep this conversation but for now, embracing open source NonStop certainly needs to be on the agenda of future NonStop community gatherings. Looking forward to upcoming NonStop events and conferences and hope to see you there. Concluding then with thoughts from the Mandalorian, ‘this (just) is the way!’ Or perhaps, reimagining the famous line from Star Trek’s Captain Picard, ‘make it so!’”
We’re not quite done with interesting quotes as the article from Pyalla Technologies “Introducing the rebranding of Real Time View” by Richard Buckle talks about many controversial topics related to NonStop vendors and ends with “let me close with those famous words from baseball great, Yogi Berra: ‘In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.’”
“Keith Moore (Distinguished Technologist) and I have been discussing potential AI use cases around NonStop. I think most are aware of my interest in using AI to thwart human trafficking within the financial services area utilizing money-laundering patterns but another idea which fits the copilot model better would be to feed NonStop manuals, softdocs, GNSC logs and anything else we could find into a LLM (Large Language Model) to create a NonStop copilot which could hopefully answer system management, programming and database questions that might arise when running a NonStop.”
In the article by Justin Simonds, HPE’s Master Technologist,” AI is my Co-Pilot: Should we feel threatened?” Justin discusses many aspects of introducing AI into people’s life. I found this particular paragraph that I’d like to highlight:
“Keith Moore (Distinguished Technologist) and I have been discussing potential AI use cases around NonStop. I think most are aware of my interest in using AI to thwart human trafficking within the financial services area utilizing money-laundering patterns but another idea which fits the copilot model better would be to feed NonStop manuals, softdocs, GNSC logs and anything else we could find into a LLM (Large Language Model) to create a NonStop copilot which could hopefully answer system management, programming and database questions that might arise when running a NonStop.”
Read the article – interesting indeed!
TANDsoft article points out “In addition to our FS Compare and Repair solution, TANDsoft offers a range of solutions for teams running critical workloads in NonStop environments.” If you did not realize that read the article and talk to the TANDsoft at the upcoming TBC2024. Article points out: “HPE NonStop Technical Boot Camp. This event will be taking place in Monterey, California, September 23-26, 2024. The TANDsoft team will be exhibiting at the event. Be sure to visit us at booth #S-1.”
TCM talks about the need of embracing young, new NonStop participants in the many events, TBC2024 in particular. The article talks about kites flying (seriously), quotes from TCM’s Daniel Craig who was originally Under40SIG leader, it highlights the successes of the Sig mission and it ends with: “should you be among the youthful attendees new to NonStop then seek us out as we would openly welcome you to the Under40SIG”
TIC Software also emphasizes the theme of 50 years anniversary, contains the picture of Tandem founder and talks about what is critical for NonStop success in the next 50 years. “…key areas that are crucial for future-proofing NonStop: modernizing the platform, exploring new technologies, and investing in people.”
OmniPayments article talks about the next serious opportunity for the company. Please read the article where you will find interesting information:
“A digital wallet is essentially an online service or system that enables users to store their credentials and assets digitally and make financial transactions electronically. Currently, this solution accounts for 70% of the value of all e-commerce transactions and 50% of point-of-sale transactions in APAC. By next year, 84% of Southeast Asians are projected to use digital wallets.”
“In terms of numbers, AliPay claims a billion users, WeChatPay another billion users, with a lot of overlap across China and those influenced by China. India has reached 500 million users on PhonePe, with 300 million on PAYtm. In the lesser populated countries of SE Asia Malaysia Singapore and the Phillipines, GrabPay counts some 100 million users, with GCash in the Philippines boasting some 94 million to so.”
These numbers may get you interested in reading the whole article! “One limitation of these wallets is that they are generally accepted only within one country and cater mainly to locals. Simply put, wallets still stumble when crossing borders — or serving those who do so.” This is the next opportunity!
