Issue 9.4 Editorial

Editorial April 2025

Here comes the April issue of the NonStop Insider!

In the article “New to NonStop,” Richard Buckle addresses the subject of new to NonStop, and particularly young people, becoming a popular item at RUG meetings and events. “The emergence of the “New to NonStop” SIG – a reinvention of the former Under 40 SIG following interactions among NonStop community members looking to broaden its focus. As such, this latest SIG is a completely fresh approach to meeting the needs of the growing presence among the community of those seeking to know more about NonStop.”

Read to find out more and honestly, if you are young at heart, the New to NonStop SIG, might prove to be an opportunity to enjoy a beverage of your choice (Diet Mountain Dew or a Guiness) when next they meet at E-BITUG. Read the article to see why Diet Mountain Dew!

TCM’s article, as well, talks about the New to NonStop SIG: “Looking for details for presentations being provided by your TCM team at the upcoming E-BITUG European NonStop Symposium? Looking forward to visiting Dublin, Ireland and catching up with friends? Perhaps there will be opportunities to network with a younger generation of NonStop adherers over an Irish ale or two? New to NonStop is certainly a group with which we all should become acquainted with and yes, even for those with considerably more experience with Nonstop solutions there are opportunities for mentoring.“

From comforte: “comforte’s SecureDPS has been architected to work seamlessly with ACI RPS on HPE NonStop servers. It offers robust data protection that goes beyond PCI DSS 4.0, while preserving utility and performance.” Read to find out more.

A lot of articles center around RUG meetings and events.

CSP says: “Come visit CSP at an event near you.” The article lets you know which events CSP will be attending. As CSP often does the article ends with “For complimentary access to CSP-Wiki®, an extensive repository of NonStop security knowledge and best practices, please visit wiki.cspsecurity.com

ETI article posts a question: “What are the main considerations in an HPE NonStop backup data tiering strategy?” Well there is a reason to talk about it. ETI’s article says: “When the NonStop backup data lifecycle is considered in terms of retention, it is critical that the backup data be protected and classified in terms of how it will be protected, how many copies of the data exist, and where the data will be stored.”

Gravic’s article talks about the company’s latest contribution to The Connection publication and gives you information on in which RUG meeting and events Gravic participated and of plans for further participation. Good pictures are included!

Lusis’ article gives us the company’s news: “Lusis Payments Welcomes Mark Schermann as Global Head of Sales” Read to find out more about Mark.

NTI article touches on many topics as it unveils a new marketing program: “the marketing message NTI was taking into 2025 and yes, beyond, is one of travel. Its vision for its place among NonStop customers is as a virtual travel agent. Ensuring passports are in hand, scanning boarding passes and directing to gates for flights to desired destinations goes smoothly and for those who fly frequently, supporting a ‘frequent flyer’ program but in this case, for NonStop customer and under the branding, the 2% Club, NTI wants to reward its most “frequent users” of DRNet®. Already being promoted across multiple media channels, this new 2% Club is open, too, to those NonStop customers who find their current replication deployments are not satisfying.”

NuWave article is titled “AI for Dummies: How Does AI ‘Learn’?” I think without me saying anything more most of the NonStop Insider readers will jump right in!

Keith Moore, Distinguished Technologist at HPE, in his article “Landscaping painting” addresses changes that occurred over the years: “These days, though, it is almost a literal truth that the IT world is now a full landscape picture of IT services.” Keith states: “But the reality is that more than ever before the enterprise IT manager needs to look at the entire landscape in order to drive competitive advantage.  It is no longer viable to look at the proverbial single tree while ignoring the forest. The enterprise IT environment requires a broad view of the entire landscape as it evolves. NonStop servers continue to be hidden little gems in this landscape.”
Please read the article – it contains good information and strong opinions and as always, good touch of Keith Moore humor”

In “Real Time View ‘story telling” article by Richard Buckle one paragraph says it all: “Here at Pyalla Technologies, LLC, Margo and I are having to make adjustments with how we interact with the NonStop community. Not in any negative sense, don’t get us wrong, but what we had predicted in the past as highly likely appears not to have taken into account just how reluctant the majority of the NonStop community is in accepting that ‘what worked in the past’ may be irrelevant in the future.”

Richard has many other observations to share so read his story telling.

The article “Latest from Social Media” does not play into trying to give readers a “taste of the article” – you just need, and I am sure you will be happy to, “just read it.” Just do it, as Nike says. Thanks Richard Buckle for getting that one in!

The article from TANDsoft “Global Technology Company Shaves 11 Weeks Off
its Comparison Cycles with FS Compare and Repair” is sure worth reading! The article ends with “To find out more, be sure to visit the FS Compare and Repair page. If you’d like to get a free license of FS Compare and Repair, please reach me at the following email: jack.digiacomo@tandsoft.com” I do recommend you read the article and take Jack on his generous offer!

“The value that comes with NonStop RUG gatherings, worldwide” is an additional article provided by TCM and is quite informative and also pretty nostalgic:

“RUGs or, Regional User Groups to give it the full description, have been an influential part of the history of NonStop. Dating back to the earliest such gathering in San Jose, California that took place in the late 1970s and proved to be the precursor to the formation of ITUG, (International Tandem User Group) we all knew so well.”

“Little did we know ahead of time that Compaq would enter the scene, changing Tandem to NonStop, acquiring Digital Equipment (DEC), and then HP purchasing Compaq and mixing it in with the HP-UX folks, to create the Connect Community of today, but if we had been attending user group meetings, we would have been among the very first to hear of this development.”

Separately, from the NonStop Insider team, comes a reflection on RUG events already held.

“Knowing where to turn to for products, access to services providers and consultants is on display whenever you attend a RUG event. Access to NonStop executives and senior management is likewise on display and they are just as readily accessible as everyone else in attendance.

“The true strength of the NonStop community at large has always come from opportunities to network and to engage in productive conversations with those who may have gone before, whether products or services.”

You just may enjoy it!
