Issue 8.6 Editorial

Editorial August 2024

The date of TBC2024 is coming fast, so there are still a lot of articles related to the Tandem’s (now HPE NonStop)’s 50th anniversary.

Let me start with an article from someone we all know and who is as well-known to today’s HPE NonStop folks as he was to Tandem folks back in the day. I will respect the title he just gave himself and say that this article is written by Keith Moore, “The NonStop Talker.”

Keith talks about the history of NonStop in the 20th century: “What you might call near-generational history. Three decades in particular that are most interesting for technology are 1920-1930 (or stretch 1919-1936), post WWII 1950-1960, and the 1970-1980 post IC gold rush.” You have to read it!

Keith also promotes his and Justin Simonds’ session that they will be giving at TBC2024: “Justin Simonds and I are doing a fun session about this long and winding Tandem road. I bet there are some turns in the road you haven’t seen or heard of before.  For me, the history, the Tandem origins, and the potential to take Tandem technology forward, make for a very special time to celebrate a great milestone of 50 years of Tandem (1974-2024).”

In another article, NonStop and Edge Computing, Keith writes about his ideas – you may find it influencing your own ideas and plans.

The article by Justin Simonds, HPE Master Technologist, titled A Walk in the Clouds is his opinion and if you are considering use of Public Clouds then you, for sure, should read it. The conclusions are particularly interesting:

“Gartner used to talk about bimodal IT, which are the two main divisions of IT.  There is the reliable operating model with its trusted and true applications usually associated with run books and best practices that have developed around these mission-critical systems. The new part of IT revolves around Agile design and fast-fail business ideas that can quickly be confirmed or eliminated. These are competing IT strategies to a certain extent but the idea is to provide the very best, most efficient and most cost-effective processing to the business allowing it to compete.”

Richard Buckle, who lately uses the title of Chief Story Teller, wrote another opinion article, titled: The power of NonStop Regional User Groups (RUGs).  Richard says: “If the events of the past few weeks with Clouds fending off ferocious DDoS attacks and CloudStrike taking down much of the world’s infrastructure (make you wonder if having cash and avoiding flying are in our future) are any indication, perhaps a strong word or two from the NonStop community can steer conversations in a positive way for NonStop.”

Frans Jongma, HPE Advanced Technology Center, wrote the article titled: NonStop SQL and Friends – The Best Choice for the Cloud. The article ends with “Come and see the HPE booth or my presentation on Wednesday where we can show you SQL/MX DBS in real time and explain the functionality in detail.”

TANDsoft’s article, FS Compare and Repair adds support for Zero-Downtime Migration, is certainly worth reading – here are a few things you may not have been aware of: FS Compare and Repair are “Available via HPE GreenLake. HPE GreenLake features an array of cloud and as-a-service solutions that are available on a pay-as-you-go basis. Now, your organization can access leading TANDsoft solutions like FS Compare and Repair through the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform.” The article ends with “Be sure to visit us at the TBC 2024 event and find out more about the TANDsoft solutions and how they can help your team maximize resilience, availability, and cost efficiency in your HPE NonStop environments.  We’ll be in booth number S-1 in the Partner Pavilion.”

When it comes to the TCM article, TCM questions the adage, “We have always done it that way.” One of the paragraphs in the article stood out for me: “There is always a better way. Business can be improved upon when a refresh proves to be an opportunity to rethink an approach. Faster database access. Better storage options. Serious upgrades to security. For TCM, our consultants also come with tools and utilities designed to make any NonStop refresh more productive and if you join in the conversations at TBC 2024, you will hear firsthand of what can be expected from a refresh.”

In the article by ETI-NET, ETI-NET encourages elevated priorities; delivers enterprise resilience, you will read: “ETI-NET is a Platinum Sponsor at NonStop TBC 2024 in Monterey. As the major annual event for the global NonStop community, it is the place to hear from the NonStop eco-system updates to product roadmaps, customer use cases and deep dives into feature sets. For 2024, there is a growing sense of urgency to know more about the protection that can be provided by these vendors and ETI-NET is offering a suite of products dedicated to providing such protection.”

From comforte you will see an article, How comforte’s SecurDPS Can Support
Your PCI DSS 4.0 Plans, and you may be interested in reading about it. Here is a paragraph that I found encouraging:

“To articulate the benefits of comforte’s SecurDPS Enterprise Solution for encryption and tokenisation, we commissioned Coalfire Systems to run a detailed and independent technical analysis. It offers useful insight into how the product can support PCI DSS 4.0 compliance by reducing the risk and scope of CHD stores in enterprise environments.”

From Gravic you will read: “At the Gravic-sponsored Video Table, several vintage Mr. NonStop videos will be playing in a loop for attendees to enjoy and stroll down memory lane. We expect that Jimmy Treybig (keynote speaker), Tandem alumni, customers, and vendors will see firsthand the culture that binds all of the Tandem folks together and realize the loyalty that goes beyond just technology. We look forward to seeing you there.”

From InfraSoft you will read an article titled Harvest Now, Decrypt Later Problem –
uLinga Products Enhanced to Provide Quantum Safe Encryption, where authors, Hugo Bouderlique, Software Developer and Andrew Price, Director, Business Operations, summarize the article with: “If you’d like to take a deeper look at the threat of Quantum Computing and its impact on all aspects of cryptography, on asymmetric encryption and beyond, we invite you to attend our session at this year’s Technical Boot Camp in September.”

Payments Solutions provider Lusis’ article, Revolutionizing Currency Conversion; Lusis Payments’ Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) Solution, clearly states: “Dynamic Currency Conversion is a service that allows international cardholders to view transaction amounts in their home currency at the point of sale or ATM. This transparency provides a better customer experience by eliminating the uncertainty of foreign exchange rates and potential hidden fees. Lusis Payments has developed a state-of-the-art DCC solution that integrates seamlessly with existing payment infrastructures. This service is offered by a leading North American bank to its customers and is also provided as a service to several other banks.” Do read the article, this is a great help to financial customers.

NTI’s article, Bundling limits opportunity – For the HPE NonStop community, NTI promotes a best-of breed approach to product selection, contains a paragraph you may want to understand in depth, and TBC2024 gives you a perfect environment to discuss it with the NTI’s team:

“The future of NonStop is tied up with functionality and, for more solutions to become available on NonStop, the price of supporting infrastructure, tools and utilities simply has to come down. To this end, NTI is fully embracing Save Time; Save Money; Save NonStop. If today, it’s all about Can’t Stop; Won’t Stop; NonStop! than surely, Save Time; Save Money; Save NonStop! is a direction albeit a challenge that will prove hard to ignore.”

Note that in his Opinion article titled The power of the Regional User Groups (RUGs) Richard Buckle provided a map to the NTI’s evening gatherings that you may want to join: “Yes, it is 2024 and it’s time to celebrate!”

In NuWave’s article, titled interestingly, You can teach an old dog new tricks, you will read: “Discover how embracing modern technology can revolutionize your development process in Joe Peterson’s insightful article, ‘You Can Teach an Old Dog New Tricks: Or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love New Tech.’ As a seasoned software engineer at NuWave Technologies, Joe shares his transformative journey from outdated NonStop application development tools to cutting-edge solutions that have significantly enhanced his workflow.”

I find the title to be intriguing given the close proximity to the conference that will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the creation of NonStop (Tandem) systems. Just think about it! There will be quite a few people there that were there at the beginning or almost the beginning. J
