Editorial December 2024

And so 2024 is coming to the end! Decorations everywhere, greeting cards aplenty and everyone starting to plan for what is to come in 2025!

Of course eBITUG and TBC plans are being made so I will start with Richard Buckle’s article “What user groups mean to me”. In the article’s conclusion: “What will remain constant is the very idea of NonStop. It will morph and we are seeing this already occurring. From traditional to virtual to beyond. Who knows where the NonStop journey will take us but be assured; it will never become a journey of one. This journey will be blessed with likeminded enthusiasts. So yes: Can’t stop; Won’t stop, NonStop is more than just a mantra. It’s a perfect reminder that on reflection and following fifty years of activities, this simple mantra applies equally to the community as it does to the NonStop systems.”  Richard summarizes his views on the meaning of the NonStop concept.

As always, TCM concentrated on the work that needs to be accomplished, the 2024 achievements and right at the top of 2025 yet another big challenge. “Looming large is the January 17, 2025 deadline for European implementation of the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA). While this entered into force back on January 16, 2023 it will be applicable to all NonStop customers in the financial sector. This is a sizable market for NonStop and the presence of NonStop among the biggest financial institutions in Europe represent an opportunity for TCM. Working with HPE and the NonStop team, we have worked on solutions that both meet regulatory requirements and are meeting the needs of our NonStop customers.”

comforte’s article leaves up to its promise expressed in the title: “A Beginner’s Guide to PCI DSS 4.0: A look at the Requirements one-by-one”. Please read the article, comforte said: “To help newcomers, we’ve put together a short three-part series of blogs outlining the 12 key requirements of PCI DSS 4.0 and six control objectives, which went into effect earlier this year. Together, they provide a comprehensive list of detailed best practices for complying organizations to follow.”

ETI-NET article addresses the need to adhere to the regulations when it comes to backups. Please read and see if it will bring a smile to your face. “We may no longer look longingly back at the days when computer systems were deployed with absolutely no connections to the outside world. We may even smile at the idea of deploying a server that is not only air-gapped and is immutable and effectively siloed in an out of the way service cupboard. But such strategies of the past now don’t seem that different to what is now being mandated. Yes, different but in many ways, achieving the same end result.”

From Gravic, Inc comes a news: “Gravic, Inc. is pleased to announce the General Availability of HPE Shadowbase software version 7.000 for HPE NonStop Servers (SPR ID: T1122L70) with the following updated features:” OK, you need to read the article to find out all of the changes and enhancements!

“The Future of OpenSSL On NonStop: Changes Coming” is an article by Randall S. Becker (ITUGLIB Volunteer from Nexbridge Inc.) and Bill Honaker (ITUGLIB Chair from XID Software, Inc.). You may find it quite useful to read!

News from HPE’s NonStop Division, the “column has been reposted from the recent issue of The Connection with permission from the author, Roland Lemoine and the Connect organization” addresses the topic of “According to a Harris Interactive poll, many people consider 50 years old to be the “best age” if they could live forever in good health at a particular age. So, are the best NonStop years ahead of us?” Then Rolland says: “Why is a platform that some competitors would conveniently label with negative connotation words such as proprietary, legacy, mainframe, maybe because they are themselves new entrants without a similar customer recognition, still have such a strong customer loyalty and continuously renewed commitment? Read the article it speaks to our NonStop souls!

In this December 2024 issue of the NonStop Insider NTI’s article addresses the benefits of user groups meeting, and discussions between NonStop vendors. Read the article, but I could not resist putting here a quote by Tim Dunne: “As we heard from our customers that there was a need to address modernization across the board and how it was proving difficult and expensive to modernize updating access via APIs to modern networks, we once again turned to our partner, Infrasoft, for a solution,” said Tim Dunne following announcement of NTI’s DRNet®/Unified for Application Integration – powered by uLinga Gateway. “Today, integrating applications within a hybrid IT world is an important aspect of any steps taken towards further modernization. With the availability of uLinga Gateway, and its inclusion within the DRNet®/Unified product portfolio as DRNet®/Unified for Application Integration, we have an immediate ability to address these customer requirements.”

In the News from OzTUG, Infrasoft extended thanks to the organizers and commented on the 2024 Infrasoft planning meeting, which pretty much each year coincides with the OzTUG held in Sydney: “We had our meetings and Christmas lunch the week of Dec 2nd, and once again overlapped with the OzTUG drinks, so we’ve had a productive and enjoyable week, with both planning meetings, and catching up with friends and former colleagues at OZTUG. Our planning meetings were mostly focused on our uLinga for Kafka and uLinga Gateway products, and the newer features that are being developed within each.  Data Transformation is a hot topic with our customers, as well as some new diagnostic features to help with visibility of data flowing to/from Kafka, and management of the Kafka cluster from the NonStop.  Watch this space for more details on those enhancements.”

In the Real Time View article Richard Buckle addresses many topics related to 2024 and hopes and plans for 2025 – “For 2025, I will be encouraging a greater dialogue among NonStop community members on what solutions are running today on NonStop. In so doing, I will be looking at the breadth of deployments and challenging the HPE marketing team to shine an even brighter spotlight on the accomplishments of NonStop customers. We can say what we like about the ups and downs of the NonStop trajectory and reminisce about former times, but the reality of today is how NonStop remains a force to be reckoned with in IT.”

TIC Software opens its article with: The reality is that the HPE NonStop platform remains a robust and valuable asset, offering unparalleled benefits including the best total cost of ownership (TCO) in the industry. However, we understand the challenges you face. Your team may be dealing with an aging support staff, concerns about developer recruitment, and pressure from leadership to justify continued investment in the platform. These are real challenges that demand practical solutions.

Let’s address the key misconceptions that often cloud decision-making around NonStop systems and explore proven strategies to unlock your platform’s full potential for the future.” Please read the article to find out how to deal with many misconceptions related to the NonStop systems.
