Why Crypto Agility and Resilience
Should Be the Next Stop for HPE Nonstop

These are turbulent times to be a cybersecurity leader. Nonstop environments have always been popular targets for threat actors due to the sheer volume of sensitive enterprise data and the criticality of the business processes they support. But the accelerated timetable for post-quantum computing (PQC), and changes to certificate lifecycles will create new challenges for teams.
Against this backdrop, cryptography is about more than algorithms. It’s about delivering the operational resilience, trust and availability that Nonstop customers demand. That’s why crypto agility will increasingly be non-negotiable for security teams.
Times are changing
Two developments are driving these changes. Public TLS certificate lifetimes are set to shorten dramatically over the coming years: from the current 200 days to 100 days by March 2027, and then 47 days from March 2029. That means more renewals, more monitoring, and a greater likelihood of failure if organizations continue to manage certificates manually. In this context, automation becomes essential to resilience.
Then there are the long-lived SSH public keys that many Nonstop organizations still rely on for administrative access. Rotation and revocation are manual and messy. Ownership is opaque. And auditability is often limited. Like TLS, there’s a pressing need to make the whole lifecycle more automated and controlled.
PQC adds another element of urgency. Some of the smartest minds in the world are getting ever closer to producing cryptographically relevant quantum computers (CRQCs). As machines become more stable, “Q-day” is fast approaching. But the threat is already here, in the form of harvest now, decrypt later (HNDL) attacks. The long-lived data stored by banks, governments, healthcare organizations and other Nonstop customers is at risk today.
The journey to quantum readiness will not happen overnight. But it must start soon, with agility at its heart and a willingness to embrace hybrid approaches as a pathway, even if that introduces greater operational complexity.
Protection also matters
There’s another part of the crypto-modernization story to consider. Certificates are only as trustworthy as the private keys behind them. If these aren’t properly protected, then the whole project will be built on sand. Yet too often today, secrets are copied manually, stored inconsistently, and not rotated.
In highly regulated environments, HSM-backed protection, split knowledge, dual control, separation of duties, and auditability are essential. Organizations must have utmost confidence—not only that certificates exist and will renew automatically on time, but also that their corresponding keys are protected and governed securely.
Introducing TAMUNIO Assure
This is the world that TAMUNIO Assure was built for. Not only does it introduce quantum-ready encryption, crypto agility and certificate lifecycle automation to Nonstop environments. It addresses a much broader operating model for cryptographic trust, encompassing certificates, private keys, passwords, secrets, SSH, TLS configuration, sensitive files, auditability, governance, HSM-backed controls, and resilience.
Integration is an important piece of the puzzle. TAMUNIO Assure has been designed to maintain resilience if external services become unavailable, but also to support connectivity where customers want it. That could include enterprise certificate-management processes, security monitoring, governance workflows, HSMs, and models such as ACME-based certificate automation. Resilience and connectivity should not be mutually exclusive.
Change for the better
This is not about introducing change for the sake of it. It’s about helping Nonstop customers transition from fragmented crypto operations to a more holistic, automated and agile trust model. In so doing, we can make Nonstop crypto easier to govern and more resilient.
The technological and threat landscapes are moving at pace. Organizations that fail to adapt will soon find themselves exposed to a flood of new security and operational risks. Better to plan today than wait for tomorrow.
