How Shadowbase Zero Downtime Migration Keeps Mission-Critical Systems Running Through Complex Modernization
Shadowbase Zero Downtime Migration (ZDM) Solutions for HPE Nonstop Software
Every major infrastructure migration carries the same fear: what if something goes
wrong mid-cutover and the system goes dark? For organizations running mission-critical workloads, that’s not a hypothetical risk, it’s a business event with real consequences for operations, customers, and regulatory compliance. Gravic’s Shadowbase Zero Downtime Migration (ZDM) methodology is designed to eliminate that fear, keeping source and target environments continuously synchronized so organizations can modernize without ever pulling the plug.
Article highlights:
- System migrations are often viewed as technical projects, but in mission-critical environments they are business-risk events that have direct impacts on operations, customer satisfaction, and regulatory compliance.
- Traditional migration approaches frequently rely on outage windows, prolonged freeze periods, or “big-bang” cutovers that increase operational risk and limit testing opportunities.
- Shadowbase ZDM keeps source and target environments synchronized through continuous replication, allowing organizations to validate new systems using live operational data before cutover.
- Because environments remain aligned throughout the migration process, organizations can maintain rollback readiness and reduce the uncertainty often associated with large-scale modernization initiatives.
How Shadowbase ZDM Works:
Rather than stopping production systems to complete a migration, Shadowbase ZDM continuously replicates data between source and target environments while the target system is prepared, tested, and validated.
The methodology leverages Shadowbase Online Loading (SOLV) to initially load data into the target environment. Because SOLV is integrated into the Shadowbase replication engine, it uses the same transformation and replication rules during both the initial load and ongoing synchronization process. This helps reduce inconsistencies and provides a cleaner migration path from setup through cutover.
Key benefits:
- Continuous business operations throughout the migration, no scheduled outage windows required
- Near-zero Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO), measured in seconds
- Live data validation: test the target system against real operational traffic before committing to cutover
- Full rollback readiness maintained throughout the migration process
- Support for heterogeneous environments, including both Nonstop and non-Nonstop systems
- Significantly reduced operational risk compared to traditional outage-based migration approaches
Customer Example: ZDM and Platform Refresh for an Island Bank
An island bank operating a BASE24™ application environment on HPE Nonstop servers faced
a significant modernization effort. The bank planned to migrate to new hardware, upgrade its BASE24 software, and replace a legacy replication product with a Shadowbase Sizzling-Hot-Takeover (SZT) business continuity architecture.
Using Shadowbase Zero Downtime Migration, the bank successfully completed the hardware refresh, application upgrade, and replication engine transition while minimizing downtime. The migration provided a proven and controlled approach that reduced risk and enabled the organization to modernize critical infrastructure without relying on a traditional outage-based conversion.
